Commentary on recent TV spots that have grabbed me in some way.
Dove has a 10-year history of creating ads that capture how hyper-critical women are when it comes to our body image. This latest one focuses on teen girls. Dove owns this category, and this spot feels real.
I much prefer it to the Special K #ownit campaign. I found the line "Let's be perfectly imperfect" perfectly irritating. What does that even mean? And Special K, by showing its product during the spot, is still shilling body improvement through diet. Plus, this ad ran repeatedly during the Emmys in September, during which we were subject to one perfectly perfect bobblehead actress after another. Seriously mixed messaging.
This next spot is a gloriously twee Wes Anderson parody. But I love Wes Anderson and I love eyeglasses: a match made in eyeball heaven.
I feel like I'm betraying Patagonia by writing this, but what an inspiring spot from North Face. I'm posting in honour of my adventurous daughter. Fanny, never stop [insert action verb].
